RUSHBROOKE ROWING CLUB

                             Coastal rowing

Firstly coastal or ocean rowing is not the same as olympic

rowing. due to harsher conditions the boats are both

heavier and wider than those used on rivers and lakes.

the boats that rushbrooke use are yawl type boats.

these are rowed by four people each with a single oar each

and are steered by a cox.

unlike olympic rowing, coastal rowing includes turns

in races and a team may have to perform up to 3 turns

during a  race depending on the race category.

in 2002 the new one design fibre glass boat was introduced

and this has become the standard boat used around ireland

for coastal rowing

the racing season begins in june and carries on throughout

the summer finishing with the all ireland finals in august.
